Veterans' History Project Workshop
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
This is an opportunity for individuals to learn how to take veteran oral histories. The workshop leader is the one who wrote the book Doing Veterans’ Oral History for the Library of Congress.

On 23 April, Congressman Jim Renacci will be hosting the Library of Congress for two Veterans’ History Project (VHP) workshops. Through this program, anyone that works with veterans can learn how to preserve a veteran’s experiences in the Library of Congress. This is a great opportunity for an organizations with volunteers that would like to preserve veterans’ histories or family members that want to speak with their loved ones concerning their service. The oral histories are used as primary resources in classrooms across the country and by researchers.

Barbara Sommer, author: Doing Veterans’ Oral History, will be flying in to present the workshops on preserving veterans' history. The events will be on April 23rd and are free to attend but you must register. At the event, we will provide a field kit to all participants. The field kit is used to assist in preserving the veteran’s experience.

The two workshops will be at Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park, 8005 Cleveland Massillon Rd, Clinton, OH, OH 44216, at 10:00 AM (Educators, Students, Community) and Congressman Renacci’s Parma District Office, 7335 Ridge Road, Suite 2, Parma, OH 44129 at 2:00 PM. Participants may register through Eventbrite: OVMP, https://www.eventbrite.com/e/veterans-history-project-ovmp-workshop-tickets-22784023628 or Parma, https://www.eventbrite.com/e/veterans-history-project-parma-workshop-tickets-22785266345. Participants may also register by emailing their name and number attending to Bryan Bowman, bryan.bowman@mail.house.gov. Space is limited.

The Veterans History Project is a program authorized and funded by the Federal Government and managed by the Library of Congress. The intent is to preserve the memories of this nation’s war veterans so that Americans of all current and future generations may hear directly from the veterans and better appreciate the realities of war and the sacrifices made by those who served in uniform during wartime. For information about the VHP, go to www.loc.gov/vet.

Please consider sharing this program with others that may be interested. It is a great opportunity to learn how to preserve veteran history. If anyone has questions concerning these workshops, I am available. Currently, only 5,000 Ohio veterans are represented in the VHP archive. We have veterans waiting to be interviewed and are hopeful those trained on the 23rd will interview our local veterans. I believe this event will help Ohio capture more of their stories before they are lost to time.
