Be Responsible When Walking Your Dog

One of the most wonderful creatures ever domesticated has to be the dog. Why else would there be such a proliferation of them? They come in such a variety of sizes colors attitudes and dispositions, similar to man. Nothing can be as warming as when you come home and there, at the door, is the dog wagging its tail so hard its entire body is wagging along with the tail, saying” I’m so glad to see you.”  How can anyone not be filled with joy to have that type of reception?

The dog owner has a responsibility, then, to protect the dog just as the dog would protect the owner. You feed the dog daily, take the dog to the vet with some regularity, and show the dog a similar affection as the dog has shown you. This is a wonderful relationship for both the dog and the owner.

Surely, the owner provides exercise for the animal at some point mostly by taking the dog for a walk, for city dwellers. People who see you on the street have no concept of the relationship that exists between the owner and the dog. They also have no idea of the disposition of either. How could they if they have never seen either before. The people don’t know if either owner or dog has a specific movement, odor, or word that may trigger an unexpected reaction.

With this in mind, it would be responsible for the dog owner to shorten the leash so as not to risk any negative occurrence. Dog owners often reply that the dog is friendly and never does anything negative. How many stories are there of friendly animals that never bit before?

Let’s be responsible dog owners and shorten the leash when approaching a stranger. After all, there is no way the stranger can know that your dog never bites. And remember, it is the dog that may be euthanized for something the owner could have prevented. We are euthanizing the dog who doesn’t know any other way because the dog hasn’t been instructed. Possibly we are punishing the wrong creature. Let’s keep our dogs alive and happy.
