Staying Independent Through Aging - You Need A Tool Kit!

it's time to talk about it......

Everyday 8,000 people turn 65 in America. Today older adults live longer in reasonable health, longer with more health issues, and longer in a home alone than ever before. Most Older Adults say they want to live in their own homes as long as possible, but 50% of them say they haven’t planned for their own future as an aging person. Additionally, 73 % of their adult children say they have neither thought about nor planned for the care of their aging parents. This raises serious challenges for anyone hoping to maintain their independence throughout the aging process. Staying in their own home and preventing hospitalization then placement into a nursing home requires planning. That’s what the free course, “Staying Independent Through Aging – Building Your Independence Took Kit” is all about.

The most cost-effective way to avoid calamity is for seniors and their adult children to educate themselves. By understanding the many options available for every challenge and the costs of what’s available today older adults and their loved ones can make an "emergency toolkit" and plan ahead.

A free course is now offered to older adults in the Parma, Parma Heights, Broadview, North Royalton Brooklyn, BrookPark, and Middleburg  Heights communities. Sponsored by the Cyahoga County Library at Parma, the Older Adults Resource Network and Home Instead Senior Care306. This free course features collaborative sessions by experts from three area hospitals and local senior care organizations. Class runs Fridays: October 7 to November 11; 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Through the course participants learn how to have crucial conversations so they get want they want; assemble the appropriate lists that help when a crises arises;  understand the array and diversity of senior living community options; what to do now to make your home age-in-place friendly; how to prevent hospitalization; and how to move confidently through life's 'speed bumps'.

The course is free and offered at the Cuyahoga County Library, Parma,  6996 Powers Blvd, Parma. Advance registration for the six week course is required. Contact the Parma Library and ask for Nancy Weitendorf  (440) 885-5362 to register.
