The Purple Heart Project Offers Hope To Wounded Combat Veterans

Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga at Apex Dermatology

Apex Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center founder Dr. Jorge Garcia-Zuazaga understands the physical scars born from military duty cut deeper than what the eye can see. Serving as a Marine flight surgeon opened his heart to helping others and left an impression on him, inspiring Dr. Garcia to create his nonprofit organization The Purple Heart Project to aid fellow veterans. “The Purple Heart Project at Apex is a way for me to combine my two passions of dermatology and military service. It’s a way for our group to give back to those who serve us,” Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga stated.

The Purple Heart Project at Apex Dermatology offers complimentary laser scar revision to discharged Veterans wounded in the line of duty. To find out if you qualify to receive treatments, visit https://www.apexskin.com/purpleheartproject/ and fill out a questionnaire. Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga and his team review applications and contact appropriate candidates for in-office appointments to discuss the procedure and begin treatment.

The Purple Heart Project has assisted local veterans and inspired other dermatologists to create similar charitable organizations. Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga believes helping others is an honor and encourages doctors to become involved. As part of his ongoing commitment, Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga recently became a sponsor of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition Towpath Freedom 5K benefitting service personnel.

“Our providers at Apex are really passionate about helping others and are laser-focused on one meaningful purpose - transforming lives through healthy skin,” Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga offered.  “So, it wasn’t difficult to recruit my colleagues to join me in offering scar revision services to qualified wounded veterans.”

Since establishing Apex Dermatology in 2011, Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga searched for a means of combining his philanthropic spirit and medical skills. Inspiration came from physicians treating Boston Marathon bombing victims at no cost. He realized complimentary scar revision would be the perfect merger of his dermatological training, military background, and community need. Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga began offering scar revision to veterans informally through colleagues. Popularity grew quickly, and he officially founded The Purple Heart Project on Veteran’s Day in 2019.

Non-military patients have benefited from Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga’s 15 years of scar revision experience as well. In his recent Apex blog post “What to Know About Scarring: Causes, Treatments, & More,” he addresses the impact of scars on confidence and self-esteem.

“Injuries like those sustained in active-duty service are one cause of scars, but there are other common causes of scars. One of the most is common acne, which also has a big impact on our patient’s overall self-esteem and well-being,” Dr. Garcia-Zuazaga said. “That’s why, in addition to the Purple Heart Project, we also have the Apex Acne Clinic which incorporates scar treatment into the plan from day one.”
