LOCAL STUDENTS TO HOST MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY AND WALK THROUGH DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND TO KICK OFF MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
12:00 PM
Parma Heights, OH – On Friday, May 27, Incarnate Word Academy will host its 13th Annual Military Appreciation Day in downtown Cleveland to honor and remember the heroic men and women who served our country.

More than 500 participants from Incarnate Word Academy and Holy Trinity School in Avon will gather at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for a student-led prayer service followed by Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Edward C. Malesic at 10:00 a.m. The students, teachers, and parents will also be joined by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word, members of the Army National Guard, and a number of local veterans.

After Mass, the Cleveland Police will escort the students through the streets of Cleveland for a three-mile “Freedom Walk” to First Energy Stadium. The Cleveland Browns have graciously agreed to host the students in The Draft Room for lunch.

As a designated Purple Star School, Incarnate Word Academy sponsors a number of events throughout the school year to support the troops and veterans. The efforts are spearheaded by Ms. Stacey Shalala, an English teacher at Incarnate Word Academy.

“Ms. Shalala offers a number of meaningful opportunities throughout the school year for our students to connect with current and retired members of the military,” says Mike Wisnor, president of Incarnate Word Academy.

“Our students gain a tremendous appreciation for our country, our first responders, and those who serve in the military thanks to Ms. Shalala,” adds Wisnor.

The theme for this year’s event is “Walk with a Warrior, Walk for a Warrior” to pay homage to all those who have bravely served in the military.
