Keep Drugs Off Our Streets

This past year in Ohio, over 3,500 people died from fentanyl-related overdoses. This tragic drug crisis has continued to rip apart families and communities in our state and around the country. I have been working hard in Congress to advocate for common-sense border security measures to stop the flow of drugs, like fentanyl, at the Southern border.

In May of last year, I voted for H.R. 2 - The Secure the Border Act - to provide relief to Border Patrol Agents and Homeland Security staff who have been struggling to maintain order at our border. This bill resumes the construction of the border wall, provides 22,000 more border patrol agents, and grants local law enforcement jurisdiction to enforce federal immigration law. When I meet with business owners, farmers, and families from the district, the safety and well-being of our community is a top priority for almost everyone. The crisis at our Southern border has persisted for far too long. H.R. 2 will secure the border and stop the flow of drugs, criminals, and terrorists into the United States.

Additionally, the House passed the HALT Fentanyl Act. This bill recognizes how destructive fentanyl is by permanently rescheduling fentanyl as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. Placing fentanyl under Schedule 1 ensures law enforcement agencies have the tools they need to keep this dangerous drug off our streets and impose harsher penalties for drug dealers who are bringing fentanyl into our communities. In order to bring this relief faster, I authored an amendment that was included in the bill to shorten the rulemaking processfrom one year to six months. The HALT Fentanyl Act will go a long way in stopping the proliferation of fentanyl and will be the first step towards healing the communities that have been broken by this drug.

These two bills will help protect our communities and save lives. The Senate has not taken up either bill, but they need to stop sitting on their hands and pass this crucial legislation. Without The Secure the Border Act and the HALT Fentanyl Act, our communities will continue to suffer from the scourge of fentanyl that has destroyed so many families in Northeast Ohio.

I will keep supporting crucial legislation that will make our border more secure, keep drugs off our streets, and keep our communities safe. I deeply value the trust placed in me by the residents of Northeast Ohio.
