Street Sign Dedicated To The Memory Of Sgt. Nick Hunter Of The Parma Police Department

On March 7th, 2025, the throughway off of Regency Dr. to the Parma PD front desk was named, "Nick Hunter Way". The street sign is illuminated 24/7 with the globe emitting a blue light to honor Sgt. Nick Hunter. Sgt. Hunter passed away on September 12th, 2022, from an unexpected medical emergency. Hunter served in the U.S. Navy from 1984 - 1990. He graduated from the Cleveland Hts. police Academy in 1993 and was sworn in as Parma's first African American police officer on April 13th, 1993. Hunter was promoted to Sergeant on November 5th, 2003. At the time of his passing, he was in his 29th year of service with the department and was the senior ranking Sergeant. Known for his consistent cheerful demeanor, friendly smile, and calmness, Hunter made an indelible mark on all those he came in contact with.

Hunter received several commendations during his service to Parma community:

  • 2012 - letter of appreciation from the Safety Director for his response and action when on scene at the Cracker Barrel shooting.
  • 2010 - Assisted Cleveland Police with an armed male under mental distress. Hunter acted as a negotiator and talked the male into dropping the firearm and giving himself up without incident.
  • 2006 - Letter of appreciation from the Fire Chief for his rapid response and life-saving efforts for an unresponsive male.
  • 1997 - Recognized by the Cleveland Mental Health Services for his assistance with the Mobile Crisis Unit.
  • 1995 - Award of Merit for actions taken responding to an alarm call at John Muir Elementary.

The Hunter family approached Parma City Council in 2023 and proposed a street to be named in Hunter's honor. It is with great pride that this dedication to Sgt. Hunter is now official and will forever be a beacon of his memory and service.

Thank you to all who participated in the ceremony and for all of the heartfelt comments received. Be kind, be safe, and be Parma Proud.
